The Audubon Naturalist Society held a grand opening of its restored Woodend nature sanctuary on October 6. Have you visited there yet? We will be met by ANS’s Bradley Simpson who will guide us and answer questions about the restoration he is managing. Feel free to join the tour or just take a walk together. Parking is available on Brierly or on the gravel lane inside the entrance. Please note: ANS does not allow dogs in the sanctuary.
Whether you run, walk, or use a wheelchair, walker, cane or stroller, you are welcome to discover this newly restored oasis of sustainable habitats on this 33-acre portion of the sanctuary. Use the new wheelchair-accessible trail. Look for the box turtle, frogs, woodpeckers, and other wildlife that can now flourish because of the upgraded stream, pond, and butterfly-friendly meadow habitats. Come see the new native plants in the woods, including more than 350 native trees, 800 native shrubs and nearly 10,000 native plants. Learn how the newly restored stream helps to decrease pollution into Rock Creek and even the Chesapeake Bay.Â
